Description
Sentimental Mood is a great way to introduce rubato to students. It is a heartfelt and tender piece. The hands trade off with the melodic motif as it is repeated sequentially. The main motif in the intro consists of sequences of descending triads with a passing tone, while the accompaniment is gently supporting the melody with blocked triads. At first glance this piece looks fairly easy to play, however, the challenge is shifting the balance from hand to hand and keeping the accompaniment as gentle as possible. This shows off the student’s sensitivity, especially in a program filled with showstopper pieces. It can serve as a breath of fresh air.
